Boko Haram Attacks Kill 30 in Borno State

UN Condemns Mass Killing of Civilians in Borno State

About thirty people, including women and children, have been killed in fresh Boko Haram attacks in Borno State. The attacks occurred on Monday in Chibok and Kala Balge local government areas. Seven mourners were shot dead during a third-day prayer for a late community leader in Chibok, while several commuters were killed in an improvised explosive device blast in Kala Balge.

The mourners, all men, were attacked around 6pm during prayers when the insurgents opened fire. Several others sustained gunshot injuries and are receiving medical attention.

In a separate incident near Rann, the headquarters of Kala Balge LGA, an IED believed to have been planted by Boko Haram exploded, killing multiple passengers travelling to Gamboru Ngala. Among the dead were at least four women, six children, and several men. Three other victims, including a woman, a child, and a man, were injured and taken to nearby health facilities.

Governor Babagana Zulum, during a visit with a federal delegation led by defence chiefs, blamed the attacks on Nigeria’s porous borders. He warned that unless the cross-border movements of insurgents are curtailed, the security of residents cannot be guaranteed. The attacks follow a series of deadly incidents in the state, including the recent killing of fourteen farmers and ten Civilian JTF members.
