NUT demands implementation of Safe School initiative

The Nigeria Union of Teachers has called for full implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative and increased security personnel and surveillance around vulnerable schools nationwide, following the rescue of 46 pupils and teachers abducted in Oyo State’s Oriire Local Government Area.

NUT National President Titus Amba, speaking at a Monday press briefing in Abuja, described the rescue after 56 days in captivity as “a great relief,” while mourning the two teachers killed during the ordeal. He called for rapid emergency response systems in high-risk school areas, improved intelligence gathering, increased funding for school security infrastructure, and psychosocial support for victims.

Amba noted attacks on schools have persisted since the 2014 Chibok abduction and 2018 Dapchi kidnapping, with more recent incidents in Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto and Borno states.

Separately, the union’s Oyo State wing demanded the urgent rescue of Matthew Owoade, a 60-year-old headmaster abducted on Saturday in Itesiwaju Local Government Area, whose family says kidnappers are demanding a ₦30 million ransom.
