Paucity Of Funds Delaying Appointment Of Ambassadors, Says Foreign Affairs Minister

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, says a lack of funds has delayed the appointment of ambassadors to serve in foreign missions.

Speaking at the ministerial briefing on Tuesday to mark President Bola Tinubu’s one year in office, he said the present administration inherited a federal ministry of foreign affairs that was not adequately funded.

He also said the embassies abroad cannot be run effectively and judiciously without funds, a situation, he says, the president is aware of and is working to ensure that the ambassadors are appointed soonest.

Last September, Tinubu directed the recall of all career and non-career ambassadors serving in different countries.

While the president has appointed consuls-general and chargés d’affaires, there has been no mention of when the successors of the recalled ambassadors will assume office.
