The Peoples Democratic Party’s zoning of its 2027 presidential ticket to the South has sparked fresh controversy, with northern aspirant Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim pledging to contest the decision at the party’s national convention in November.
Speaking in Abuja, he argued that the convention, not the National Executive Committee, holds the ultimate authority on such matters. He recalled previous instances where delegates overturned NEC resolutions, insisting zoning undermines internal democracy and shuts out competent contenders.

Olawepo-Hashim, from North Central Nigeria, maintained that his region has never produced a president or vice president and should not be denied the chance. He urged the PDP to allow an open contest based on competence, not sectional sentiment.
Over 170 PDP leaders in the Federal Capital Territory, including council executives and candidates, declared support for his ambition, rejecting the zoning arrangement.
