Presidency Defends Politicians' Defections to APC

The Nigerian presidency has insisted that recent defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) are voluntary and not the result of coercion by President Bola Tinubu or his allies.

In a statement on Sunday, presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga rejected claims that the defections were undermining democracy, maintaining that freedom of association remains intact.

According to the Presidency, those switching allegiance believe the administration’s reforms serve the broader interests of Nigerians.

Mr. Onanuga’s statement comes after a wave of high-profile defections last week, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, commissioners, and local council leaders.

Mr Okowa, notably, served as the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general election.

The presidency maintained that Nigeria’s multiparty democracy remains vibrant and secure.
