President Tinubu agrees to reinstate Fubara as Rivers governor under strict conditions

President Bola Tinubu has approved the reinstatement of Siminalayi Fubara as the governor of Rivers State under a political settlement that bars him from seeking re-election in 2027. The agreement was reached during a closed-door meeting on Thursday night at the Presidential Villa, attended by Fubara, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, suspended Speaker Martin Amaewhule, and key lawmakers.

Sources within the presidency say the truce is aimed at ending the prolonged political crisis in the state. Under the deal, Fubara will complete his current term but must relinquish control over the appointment of local government chairpersons, a role now handed to Wike. The president reportedly stressed that Rivers cannot afford continued instability.

As part of the arrangement, Fubara is to settle outstanding entitlements owed to 27 pro-Wike lawmakers, who in turn will halt all impeachment efforts against him. These lawmakers, who had defected to the APC, were previously suspended amid the political fallout.

The crisis between Wike and Fubara had paralysed state governance, prompting President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in March. He also suspended Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu and the state assembly for six months, appointing retired naval chief Ibok-Ette Ibas as sole administrator. Fubara is expected to resume office by September.
