President Bola Tinubu will deliver a joint address to the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary. This was announced on Tuesday during the inauguration of the inter-ministerial committee responsible for organising the national celebration.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, inaugurated the committee at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja and stated that the presidential address would be one of the major highlights of the programme approved for the commemoration. Akume described Democracy Day as an occasion to reflect on the sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for the return of democratic rule, paying tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993, struggle and the late Moshood Kashimawo Abiola.
He said the anniversary provides an opportunity for the federal government to showcase its efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and advance national development despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.
Other approved activities include a world press conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, a special interdenominational church service on June 7, a Democracy Day public lecture on June 9, youth and women-oriented programmes on June 10, a presidential broadcast on June 12, and a Democracy Day gala night on June 12. The celebration will mark 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria since the return to civilian rule in 1999.
