Raul Castro part of Cuba–US talks, says President Diaz-Canel

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel says former leader Raúl Castro is involved in early-stage talks between Cuba and the United States. He made the disclosure in a televised interview on Wednesday, as tensions between the two countries continue to rise.

Diaz-Canel said the discussions are still at an initial phase and that any progress would take time. He noted that Raúl Castro is helping to guide the dialogue process alongside the ruling Communist Party and government structures.

The Cuban leader said the first step would be establishing a channel for dialogue before agreeing on common areas of interest. He added that both sides would need to show commitment for any negotiations to move forward.

The talks come amid strained relations following US President Donald Trump’s recent comments and an ongoing oil blockade that has worsened power shortages in Cuba.
