Red Cross Reports Mass Casualties in Gaza as Conflicting Accounts Emerge

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has confirmed a “mass casualty influx” at its field hospital in Rafah, southern Gaza, following a disputed incident near an aid distribution site.

In a statement on Sunday, the ICRC said ‘179 casualties, including women and children, arrived at the hospital with gunshot and shrapnel wounds,’ and ‘21 were declared dead upon arrival.’

It added that ‘all patients said they had been trying to reach an aid distribution site,’ describing the episode as ‘the highest number of weapon-wounded in a single incident since the field hospital was established over a year ago.’

Hamas officials accused Israeli forces of opening fire on civilians. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) rejected that claim, saying preliminary findings show no fire was directed at people near the site.

The group managing the centre, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, also denied casualties occurred there.

Verification remains difficult due to restricted media access by the Israeli government.
