Reps Set December 10–11 for Vote on Constitution Amendments

The House of Representatives has scheduled December 10 and 11 to vote on major proposals in the ongoing amendment of the 1999 Constitution. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu announced the timetable at plenary, noting that debates on the bills will continue ahead of next week’s vote. He urged members to be present as the committee concludes its harmonisation work.

Initially, 87 amendment bills were introduced, covering electoral, judicial and fiscal reforms. After public hearings and consultations, the number has been trimmed to about 45 items heading for a vote.

Key proposals include the creation of state police, special seats for women, independent candidacy, and local government autonomy. Lawmakers will also consider new state creation and expanded roles for traditional rulers.

Kalu said the final stage of the process now depends on state assemblies, which must approve the amendments after the National Assembly concludes its vote.
