Review Fuel Subsidy Removal, Falana Tells Federal Government

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana SAN, says the Federal Government should review the fuel subsidy removal policy in favour of Nigerians, over claims that Nigeria is still paying for it.

The World Bank claims that the Federal Government is still paying subsidy for the petrol, and more recently, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Pinnacle Oil and Gas Limited Mr. Robert Dickerman, says the amount paid could be up to N1 trillion per month.

In a statement on Sunday, Mr. Falana, citing the claims, says the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited has not denied the allegation that fuel subsidy has been restored.

The lawyer also says since there is no provision for fuel subsidy in the 2023 and 2024 Appropriation Act, the Federal Government should confirm or deny the allegation and end what he labels as the opacity surrounding the importation of fuel from foreign countries.

He adds that instead of urging Nigerians to continue to endure the hardship caused by the removal of subsidies on petrol, the Bola Tinubu administration should review the policy in the interest of the Nigerian people.

At his inauguration, President Bola Tinubu announced an end to petrol subsidy, triggering a hike in the prices of the product across the country.
