Saka fires Arsenal into first Champions League final in 20 years

Arsenal have reached the UEFA Champions League final for the first time in 20 years after a 2-1 aggregate victory over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night. Bukayo Saka scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 second-leg win at the Emirates Stadium, following a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Spain.

Saka, who returned from injury at the weekend and captained Mikel Arteta’s side, struck in the first half after Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak parried Leandro Trossard’s effort into his path. The England international, who is of Nigerian heritage, now has 11 Champions League goals in 19 appearances, equalling Robert Pires on the club’s all-time European scoring list.

Atletico Madrid created chances, including a missed opportunity for Giuliano Simeone after he went past the goalkeeper, but could not find an equaliser. A late triple substitution, including the withdrawal of Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman, also failed to change the outcome.

Arsenal will now face either Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain in the final at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary, on 30 May, marking their first appearance in the competition’s final since 2006.
