Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has stressed the importance of an independent legislature in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy. Speaking at a Democracy Day lecture in Abuja, Saraki said a parliament that merely approves executive proposals without scrutiny fails in its constitutional duty and weakens democratic governance.
He argued that the separation of powers was deliberately designed to create checks and balances, warning that unchecked authority poses a threat to freedom. Saraki also recalled how legislative oversight helped uncover alleged irregularities in the fuel subsidy regime, saying strong institutions remain essential to protecting the will of the people.
