The Nigerian Senate on Thursday urged President Bola Tinubu to promptly assent to the Nigerian Forest Security Service (Establishment) Bill, 2025, which is currently awaiting presidential approval. The bill is designed to strengthen security in forests and rural areas, and could align with the President’s proposed Forest Guard initiative.
This call followed the Senate’s condemnation of the abduction of Oba James Dada Ogunyanda, the Obalohun of Okoloke in Kogi State, and recent violent attacks on communities in Benue State by suspected herdsmen. Lawmakers stressed the urgency of deploying security forces to rescue the abducted monarch and protect affected communities.

Senator Abba Moro revealed that over a dozen people were killed in coordinated attacks on Akpete and Ojantele communities in Benue’s Apa LGA earlier this month. Senators described the events as deeply troubling and indicative of growing insecurity, particularly in ungoverned forest regions.
Meanwhile, the Senate also passed a bill mandating Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs to prioritise locally manufactured automobiles in their procurement processes. Sponsored by Senator Patrick Ndubueze, the bill received overwhelming support, with Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin emphasizing its potential to boost local industries, create jobs, and reduce import dependency.
