The Lagos State Government has issued a fresh warning to landlords and agents collecting tenancy agreement fees above the legally stipulated 10 per cent. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, made this known at the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja.
She urged residents to report landlords or agents who impose excessive fees, describing such actions as exploitative and illegal under the state’s tenancy law. Odunuga-Bakare blamed unregistered agents for most of the infractions and stressed that professional associations have distanced themselves from the practice.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, said the state is considering introducing monthly and quarterly rent payment options to ease the burden of annual rent on residents.
