SERAP Sues NBC Over Ban on Eedris Abdulkareem’s Song

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has filed a lawsuit against the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, over the ban on Eedris Abdulkareem’s new song ‘Tell Your Papa’.

The track, released on April 7, addresses economic hardship in Nigeria and criticises President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies. On April 10, the NBC barred radio and TV stations from airing the song, labelling it “objectionable.”

In a suit filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, SERAP is asking the court to declare the ban illegal and a violation of Nigerians’ rights to freedom of expression, access to information, and media freedom.

The group is also seeking a perpetual injunction to stop the NBC or any other authority from preventing the song’s broadcast. SERAP argues that the commission is censoring music without showing any legitimate threat to public interest.
