Somali forces kill 27 al-Shabab fighters in Jubbaland operation

Somalia’s Ministry of Defence says 27 al-Shabab fighters have been killed in a large-scale military operation in the country’s southern Jubbaland region. The ministry said the operation was carried out on Tuesday with support from international partners who conducted air strikes.

According to the statement, the operation involved Somali forces and Jubbaland security personnel across the Lower Jubba and Middle Jubba regions. It targeted the districts of Jilib, Xagar and Afmadow.

The ministry said key members of the armed group were killed and weapons and military equipment were seized, including machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, AK-47 rifles and landmines. It said the items were intended for use against civilians.

The Somali government said operations are continuing to pursue remaining al-Shabab fighters in order to strengthen security and stability. The armed group, linked to al-Qaeda, has been fighting the federal government since 2007.
