South Africa Confirms Two Hantavirus Cases Linked to Ship

South African health authorities say two cases of hantavirus linked to a ship have been detected in the country, raising concerns over possible transmission. Officials confirmed the cases on Wednesday and said investigations were ongoing to determine the source and extent of exposure.

Authorities said hantavirus can spread through contact with infected rodents, though some strains have also shown the potential for human-to-human transmission. Health officials are monitoring individuals who may have had close contact with the infected persons linked to the vessel.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases said surveillance and containment measures had been activated while medical teams worked to trace contacts connected to the cases. Officials also urged the public to remain calm and follow health guidance as investigations continue.

Hantavirus infections can cause severe respiratory illness and are considered rare in many parts of the world. Health experts say early detection and isolation remain important in limiting the spread of infectious diseases linked to travel and maritime activity.
