Student unions threaten nationwide protests over bad federal roads

The joint leadership of student unions in Nigerian tertiary institutions has threatened to stage nationwide protests on February 4 over what they describe as the deplorable state of federal roads across the country.

The unions, comprising the National Association of Polytechnic Students, the National Association of Nigerian Colleges of Education Students and the National Association of University Students, said federal highways have become corridors of preventable deaths, claiming lives daily due to neglect and poor supervision.

In a statement, the unions listed several highways near universities and polytechnics, including the Abuja Lokoja Okene Road near the Federal University Lokoja, the Ibadan Oyo Ogbomosho Road near LAUTECH, and the East West Road near the University of Port Harcourt, citing failed road surfaces, poor lighting and heavy truck traffic.
