Protests have erupted in Nairobi over the death of 31-year-old Albert Omondi Ojwang, who died in police custody after being arrested for allegedly criticising Kenya’s Deputy Inspector General of Police.
Mr Ojwang, described as a teacher and blogger, was arrested in Homa Bay and transferred to Nairobi’s Central Police Station, where he died on Saturday. Police claim he sustained head injuries after hitting his head against a cell wall, but the family’s lawyer says his body showed signs of severe physical trauma, including bruising and swelling.

Holding placards reading “Stop killing us,” protesters gathered outside the Nairobi City Mortuary, later marching to the police station to demand justice. Kenya’s Independent Policing Oversight Authority has launched an inquiry, and several senior police officers have been suspended pending the investigation.
The director of Amnesty International Kenya described Mr Ojwang’s death as suspicious and called for urgent investigations. His death follows growing concerns over the treatment of government critics in the country.
