Ten notorious bandit leaders operating in Katsina State laid down arms and freed 16 hostages during a government-backed peace initiative held in Danmusa Local Government Area on Saturday.
Among the surrendered weapons were two AK-47 rifles, one G3, a pump-action rifle, a PKT machine gun, and ammunition, marking a significant step in the Nigerian Army’s disarmament and reintegration campaign.

The freed captives include seven women and nine children—one of whom is a seven-month pregnant woman. Military sources say the surrender follows weeks of negotiations involving army leadership and community stakeholders.
Identified gang leaders such as Kamilu Buzaru, Manore, and Dogo Baidu were among those who publicly renounced violence, pledging to release the remaining hostages by Sunday, 15 June.
The rescued victims have been handed over to local authorities for medical checks and family reunification. Officials hope this signals a turning point in efforts to restore peace across the region.
