Tinubu Flags Off Reconstruction of Key Abuja-Kano Highway

President Bola Tinubu has officially launched the reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway—one of Nigeria’s most vital road corridors. Represented by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani at the flag-off ceremony in Jere, Kagarko local government area, the President pledged to transform the long-neglected route into a modern transport lifeline.

Governor Sani described the road as a crucial artery linking the Federal Capital Territory with more than a dozen northern states. He said years of deterioration had claimed lives and stifled economic activity across the region

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced that the 700-kilometre project would be completed within 14 months using reinforced concrete. The President also approved an 11-kilometre extension of the Kano section to reach the Aminu Kano International Airport, bringing the total to 291 kilometres. The new design includes solar-powered lights and CCTV surveillance along the route.

Contracts for Sections 1 and 3—covering 118 kilometres—have been awarded at a cost of ₦252 billion, with 30 percent of the funding already disbursed. Governor Sani disclosed that his personal appeal to President Tinubu spurred immediate directives for the project to begin, and noted that improved security has made the highway safe again for travel.
