Tinubu will complete two terms, Presidency asserts

The Presidency says President Bola Tinubu will complete two terms in office, following comments by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar on power rotation ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement posted on Thursday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, criticised Atiku Abubakar’s remarks as self-serving and said they undermine Nigeria’s zoning arrangement between the North and South.

Mr Abubakar had earlier told Arise Television on Wednesday that the South has held the presidency for 18 years since 1999, compared to 10 years for the North, adding that he is not bound by zoning and that the 2027 election would be his final attempt at the presidency.

Responding, Mr Onanuga said the North’s shorter tenure was due to the death of former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2010, which led to Goodluck Jonathan assuming office, and maintained that since former President Muhammadu Buhari completed eight years, President Tinubu should do the same.
