President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing the United States to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), a body he has previously criticised over its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. This marks the second time Trump has attempted to sever ties with the WHO, following an earlier attempt during his first term.
In the latest executive order, Trump instructed US agencies to “pause the future transfer of any government funds, support, or resources to the WHO” and to find alternative partners to take on responsibilities previously handled by the organisation. He also called for the review and potential rescindment of the Biden administration’s 2024 US Global Health Security Strategy, aimed at addressing infectious disease threats.

Trump’s decision comes after a history of criticism of the WHO’s response to the pandemic, particularly accusing the body of being influenced by China. The United States, as the largest donor to the WHO, contributes substantial funding, and this withdrawal is expected to have a major impact on the organisation and its global health initiatives.
The move is seen as part of Trump’s broader agenda to reassess America’s role in international organisations and reduce its financial commitments, marking a significant shift in US foreign policy regarding global health cooperation.
