UN Calls for Immediate Halt to Arms Supplies Fueling Sudan Conflict

The United Nations has called for an immediate end to the flow of weapons into Sudan, warning that continued arms supplies are enabling the ongoing violence between Sudan’s military factions. Speaking to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, UN Undersecretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo condemned certain allies for providing arms to Sudan’s warring parties, calling it “unconscionable” and “illegal.”

Sudan has been gripped by civil war since April 15, 2023, due to a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), headed by Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo. The conflict has claimed over 24,000 lives, displaced 11 million people, and driven nearly three million refugees into neighboring countries.

According to DiCarlo, both factions are escalating their military operations, aided by substantial external support and a steady stream of arms. She emphasized that civilians are bearing the brunt of the violence.

The UN has urged the international community to stop fueling the conflict, as the humanitarian crisis in Sudan remains one of the world’s worst, with millions in dire need of aid and protection.
