UN Court Dismisses Sudan Genocide Case Against UAE

The United Nations’ top court has thrown out a case brought by Sudan accusing the United Arab Emirates of breaching the genocide convention by supporting paramilitary forces in the country’s ongoing civil war.

In a ruling on Monday, the International Court of Justice in The Hague said it “manifestly lacked” jurisdiction to proceed, noting that the UAE had opted out of the clause that gives the court authority under the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Sudan filed the case in March, urging the court to order the UAE to stop alleged support for the Rapid Support Forces and to prevent atrocities against the Masalit ethnic group in Darfur. The UAE dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated, saying it is not involved in the conflict.

Fighting erupted in Sudan in April last year between the army and the RSF. Both sides have faced allegations of serious human rights abuses. The UAE, despite repeated accusations of backing the RSF, has denied involvement.
