Kyiv Hit in Overnight Drone Attack as Russia Proposes Ceasefire

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected Russia’s proposed 72-hour ceasefire, warning that Ukraine cannot guarantee the safety of foreign dignitaries expected to attend Moscow’s Victory Day celebrations on 9 May. He accused Russia of “cynicism of the highest order” for calling for a truce while continuing daily attacks on Ukrainian territory.

Despite the announcement of a pause in fighting from 8 May, Russian forces launched a major drone assault overnight. Ukraine’s air force said it intercepted 42 of 116 drones launched by Russia. Eleven people, including two children, were injured in the capital, Kyiv, according to city military officials. In central Ukraine, Cherkasy was also struck, leaving one person injured and damaging homes and civilian infrastructure.

Meanwhile, reports from Russian war bloggers on Monday claim that Ukrainian forces fired missiles and attempted to cross into Russia’s western Kursk region. The area had previously been occupied by Ukrainian forces for several months before being retaken by Russia. Maps circulated online suggest attempted incursions at two border points, although there has been no official comment from either government.
