The United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Africa, Ahunna Eziakonwa, says the latest U.S. tariffs are a wake-up call for African countries to move beyond reliance on foreign aid.
Eziakonwa stressed the need for structural transformation in Africa, urging nations to invest in non-oil sectors and value-added production to create jobs and drive sustainable development.
She highlighted the challenges aid-dependent economies face in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, calling for urgent action to shift from exporting raw materials to building local industries.
Her comments follow a series of steep tariffs imposed by the United States in early April—most notably, a 125% tariff on Chinese imports and a now-suspended 14% tariff on goods from Nigeria.
