The United States has approved a proposed $346m sale of bombs, rockets and ammunition to Nigeria, aimed at boosting the country’s counter-terrorism and maritime security operations.
The Defence Security Cooperation Agency said the package includes over 1,000 MK-82 general-purpose bombs, 5,000 precision-guided rocket systems, fuzes, bomb components, and integration support. US officials say the deal will enhance Nigeria’s ability to tackle terrorist groups and combat illicit trafficking in the Gulf of Guinea.

Washington stressed that the sale will not alter the regional military balance and that Nigeria can readily integrate the munitions. Final costs may be lower depending on budget approvals. In 2022, the US authorised a separate $997m arms package, including attack helicopters and night-vision systems.
