United States President Donald Trump has announced an extension of the ceasefire with Iran, saying it will remain in place until Tehran submits a proposal aimed at permanently ending the conflict. He also confirmed that the United States will continue its blockade of Iranian ports as part of ongoing pressure measures.
The decision follows earlier remarks by Trump indicating reluctance to extend the truce beyond its scheduled expiration. However, in a later statement, he said the extension was necessary due to what he described as divisions within Iran’s leadership, adding that discussions involving Pakistani officials also influenced the move.
Iranian officials have strongly rejected the US position, with a senior adviser dismissing the extension as meaningless and warning that Tehran should respond militarily. Iran’s foreign minister has also described the naval blockade as an act of war, saying it violates the terms of the ceasefire agreement.

Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the blockade is aimed at restricting Iran’s oil exports and weakening its revenue base, warning of further sanctions against those who support Tehran’s trade. Analysts, however, caution that the effectiveness of the blockade will depend on its duration and enforcement, noting that Iran still has significant crude oil reserves in transit and storage.
