The US-Iran ceasefire has collapsed, with President Trump declaring the truce “over” and the US carrying out strikes on Iran for a second consecutive day.
The escalation follows Iran’s alleged attack on three commercial tankers, flagged to Liberia, Saudi Arabia and the Marshall Islands, in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday.
US Central Command said Wednesday’s strikes aim to “further degrade” Iran’s ability to threaten shipping in the strait, with explosions reported in Bandar Abbas, Chabahar, and Konarak along Iran’s southern coast.
Iran said it retaliated by targeting roughly 85 US military sites, striking bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, triggering air raid sirens in both countries. Iranian officials said they would not respond to what they called Trump’s “vulgarity,” after he branded Iran’s leadership “scum” and “vicious, violent people” at a NATO summit in Turkey.
The US has also revoked Iran’s waiver to sell oil on global markets, moving up the wind-down deadline to July 17. Oil prices jumped nearly 6% Wednesday, with Brent crude topping $78 a barrel.
