Villagers Flock to Zamfara Government House Over Departure of Security Agencies From Their Communities

Members of Bini community in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State have flocked to Government House, Gusau, on Sunday seeking refuge and government protection against insecurity.

Made up of mostly women and children, the members say they fled their village after the withdrawal of military and security personnel from the area.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, one of them, Malam Umar Salisu, says they are seeking government’s protection, as some military personnel attached to their village had been killed by bandits, and the rest were withdrawn on Sunday, leaving them unprotected.

Another community member, Aisha Usman, says the community receives threats of attacks from bandits on a daily basis, while Malam Wakkala Gurgu says they want the government to take quick action regarding their security situation by deploying security personnel to their community.

Addressing them on behalf of the state government, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Wadatau Madawaki, called for their patience as he said the government has made plans to return them to their community in the company of security operatives.

He added that the bandits were mounting pressure because the government had refused to negotiate with them.
