We’ll deliver state police by year end Says Senate

Senate Backs Direct LG Representation in FAAC Amid Supreme Court Ruling

The Senate says it will complete the amendment of the 1999 Constitution to allow for the creation of state police before the end of the year. Senate spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, says work will resume as soon as plenary reconvenes.

The move follows a request by President Bola Tinubu asking the National Assembly to begin the constitutional process as part of efforts to tackle insecurity. Lawmakers say consultations have already been held nationwide and groundwork completed.

The Senate says the amendment will be concluded before political campaigns begin ahead of the next general election. Lawmakers also say the proposal has wide support among federal and state leaders.

Meanwhile, groups including Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria and Afenifere have called for strong safeguards to prevent abuse by governors. They urged the National Assembly to include clear oversight and legal checks in the amendment.
