The Senate has opened a two-day public hearing in Lagos on proposed changes to the 1999 Constitution, with discussions centred on state police, electoral reforms, and the devolution of powers.
The session, held at Water Crest Hotel in Ikeja, is part of a national consultation process led in the South-West by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.

Proposals under review include creating 18 new local government areas, allowing independent candidates, granting traditional rulers formal roles, and enabling Nigerians in the diaspora to vote.
Other measures seek to expand state authority over labour issues, minimum wage, and waterways.
The committee has also received 31 requests for new states. Hearings will continue in other regions, except the North-West, where proceedings were postponed due to the death of Aminu Dantata.
