WFP to Halt Aid for 1.3 Million People in Nigeria Over Funding Shortfall

The United Nations World Food Programme says it will be forced to suspend emergency food and nutrition aid for 1.3 million people in northeast Nigeria by the end of July due to critical funding shortfalls. The agency warned on Wednesday that its supplies have already been exhausted, with the last round of distributions now underway.

The WFP says the looming cut comes amid rising violence and record hunger levels, with nearly 31 million Nigerians currently facing acute food insecurity. Its country director, David Stevenson, said without urgent funding, the situation threatens regional stability, as desperate families may be driven into migration or exploited by extremist groups.

Over 150 nutrition clinics in Borno and Yobe states are expected to shut down, ending treatment for more than 300,000 children under two. The agency noted that ongoing conflict has already displaced 2.3 million people across the Lake Chad Basin, worsening the humanitarian crisis.

The WFP is appealing for $130 million to continue operations through the end of 2025. It says the funding is crucial to prevent an imminent collapse of aid efforts and to support long-term recovery in affected communities.
