WhatsApp introduces usernames to protect privacy

WhatsApp has announced a new username feature that will allow users to connect without sharing their phone numbers, as part of efforts to improve privacy on the messaging platform.

In a blog post on Monday, Meta said the feature will be rolled out later this year, with users able to reserve their preferred usernames by updating the app and accessing their account settings.

The company said creators, businesses and organisations will also be able to claim their existing Facebook or Instagram usernames to maintain a consistent online identity.

WhatsApp says the feature will be introduced gradually, with users notified when it becomes available in their country.
