The political crisis in Rivers State has deepened, with a coalition of women groups staging a protest in Port Harcourt in support of the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu. Dressed in white and carrying placards, the women marched from Garrison Flyover to Isaac Boro Park, voicing support for the emergency rule and rejecting suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Led by former Commissioner for Social Welfare, Ifeyinwa Aguma—an ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike—the protesters declared their backing for Ibok-Ette Ibas, appointed by the president to administer the state. They urged Ibas to continue his leadership, describing President Tinubu’s actions as constitutional.

Monday’s march follows a counter-demonstration last week by women loyal to Governor Fubara. The protest underscores the sharp divisions that have emerged since the president’s suspension of the governor, his deputy, and the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months. The federal intervention was announced last month, citing security concerns, including recent pipeline explosions.
Meanwhile, governors of the opposition People’s Democratic Party have rejected the state of emergency and approached the courts to challenge the president’s decision.
