The Nigerian Army has trained 14,000 soldiers, half of the 28,000 approved by President Tinubu, to reinforce its fight against terrorism.
Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Waidi Shaibu, made the disclosure in Port Harcourt at the 2026 Nigerian Army Day celebration, saying 6,000 recruits passed out from Zaria, 5,000 from Osogbo, and 3,000 more are set to graduate from a newly established depot in Amasiri-Edda, Ebonyi State, the Army’s third training depot.
According to Shaibu, the military’s training curriculum has been revised to capture the realities of modern warfare with a focus on marksmanship proficiency, counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism and critical field skills.
While troops have intensified offensive operations nationwide, recording significant successes against terrorists and other criminal groups, Shaibu says rescue efforts are still underway for pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oyo State back in May, saying troops are making, in his words, “tremendous progress” to free those still in captivity.
