One hundred and seventy-six residents of Woro and Nuku communities in Kwara State have regained their freedom, six months after they were abducted in one of the deadliest attacks the state has ever recorded.
The Kwara State Government confirmed the release on Wednesday, thanking President Bola Tinubu, security agencies, and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for their roles in securing the victims’ freedom.
The victims — mostly women and children — were taken on February 3rd, when suspected Boko Haram-linked extremists stormed the two communities in Kaiama Local Government Area on motorcycles, launching a coordinated assault that lasted several hours. The attack killed more than 200 people, destroyed homes and businesses, and forced many residents to flee.
The victims are currently receiving care at the Nigerian Army Barracks in Kainji, Bussa, and are expected to be moved to Abuja or Ilorin on Thursday for medical evaluation.
The state government has not disclosed whether this was a military rescue operation, a negotiated release, or a ransom payment, saying only that security agencies have been working on the case since the attack.
