62 Nigerians detained in Uganda for ‘operating church without work permits’

Ugandan authorities have detained 62 Nigerian nationals for allegedly operating a church and engaging in other activities without valid work permits. The arrests were confirmed by the National Citizenship and Immigration Control in a statement issued on Wednesday, following intelligence reports about illegal operations in Adjumani.

According to the agency, the group was apprehended after a tip-off revealed they were conducting activities without proper documentation. Officials said the individuals were found running a church among other engagements, in violation of Uganda’s immigration laws, and are now undergoing processing for prosecution.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Simon Peter Mundeyi, said the suspects are being held at the Namanve facility as investigations continue. He noted that such individuals often present themselves as gospel preachers while allegedly engaging in unauthorised or unlawful activities.

Preliminary findings indicate conflicting accounts among the detainees. While some claim they were lured into Uganda with false job promises, authorities suspect others may be linked to online fraud and related offences. The ongoing legal process could lead to deportation, fines, or blacklisting, depending on the outcome of investigations.
