Pope Francis has urged the global community to investigate whether Israel’s military actions in Gaza constitute genocide against Palestinians. In excerpts from a forthcoming book published by La Stampa, the pontiff noted that some international experts believe the situation meets the criteria for genocide.
The Pope called for a thorough review using the Genocide Convention’s legal definitions. His remarks come amid ongoing scrutiny of Israel’s actions in Gaza, which Israel defends as a targeted campaign against Hamas and other armed groups.
South Africa filed a case at the International Court of Justice last December, accusing Israel of breaching the Genocide Convention. While judges have urged Israel to prevent genocidal acts, a final ruling on the allegations remains pending.
Israel rejects the genocide claims as baseless, maintaining its focus is on neutralising militant threats.
