Nigeria Acquires 12 Alpha Jets from France to Boost Air Force Fleet

The Nigerian government has procured 12 pre-owned Alpha jets from the French Air Force to strengthen the fleet of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). Olusegun Dada, Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Social Media, revealed that the jets were acquired through SOFEMA, a French military and aeronautics company.

The Alpha jet, developed collaboratively by France and Germany, is a versatile military aircraft primarily designed for light attack missions and advanced training. The jets are capable of carrying various weapons, including bombs, rockets, missiles, and a gun pod for close air support missions.

Dada also announced that the NAF is expecting the arrival of 24 M-346FA light attack aircraft next year. These aircraft were ordered by the previous administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari as part of ongoing efforts to enhance Nigeria’s air combat capability.

The Chief of Air Staff Hasan Abubakar noted a remarkable turnaround in NAF’s operations, citing the renewal of its aircraft fleet and improved readiness with President Tinubu’s backing. This announcement comes shortly after President Tinubu concluded a three-day state visit to France at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron.
