US-Iran strikes continue as tensions mount over access in the Strait

US and Iranian Officials Agree on Framework to End War, Reopen Strait of Hormuz, Oil Prices Fall

The U.S. struck roughly 140 targets in Iran early Sunday, the third such strike this week, after Iranian forces disabled a Cyprus-flagged container ship in the Strait of Hormuz, setting it ablaze and leaving one crew member missing.

U.S. Central Command said the strikes targeted missile and drone sites, naval assets, and communications networks, bringing the total hit over three nights to more than 300. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said the vessel had ignored warnings to follow an approved shipping route.

Iran declared the strait “closed until further notice” and struck back at Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE. Qatar’s military intercepted incoming fire, wounding three people, including a child, from shrapnel. Sirens sounded across the Gulf region.

Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, vowed revenge for his father’s killing in the war’s opening strikes on February 28, in his first public statement since the funeral.

Talks between Iran and Oman over managing the strait continue, but Iran has given no indication it will reopen it to unrestricted transit, as the U.S. has demanded.
