Nigeria’s crude oil production hits 74-month high

Nigeria’s crude oil production climbed to its highest level in over six years in June, exceeding its OPEC quota for a fourth straight month, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission announced Sunday.

Combined crude and condensate output averaged 1,735,398 (1.7 million) barrels per day in June, the highest since April 2020, a 74-month high. Crude oil alone reached 1.56 million barrels per day, representing 104% of Nigeria’s 1.5 million barrel OPEC quota.

NUPRC attributed the growth to improved operational stability and the absence of major pipeline outages, following years of production losses from crude theft and vandalism. Bonny Terminal led output at 318,280 barrels per day, followed by Forcados at 306,360 barrels per day, while Qua Iboe’s production declined slightly to 164,730 barrels per day.

The commission said June’s daily production peaked at 1.89 million barrels and never fell below 1.57 million. Sustained growth would support Nigeria’s push toward its target of 2 million barrels per day, a goal that has proven elusive due to insecurity and ageing infrastructure, though officials say reforms under the Petroleum Industry Act are helping drive the recovery.
