Report Accuses Israel of “Massacre” of Journalists in Gaza

Two separate reports from media freedom organisations have condemned Israel for carrying out a “massacre” of journalists in Gaza, an accusation that has been denied by the Israeli government. According to an annual report by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), 18 journalists were killed by the Israeli army this year, including 16 in Gaza and two in Lebanon.

RSF described the killings as “an unprecedented massacre,” noting that the deaths represented around a third of the total 54 journalist fatalities worldwide. The report also revealed that more than 145 journalists have been killed by the Israeli army in Gaza since the war began in October 2023, with 35 of them killed while actively reporting.

In response to these findings, RSF has filed four complaints with the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing the Israeli army of committing war crimes against journalists. The Israeli government has denied any wrongdoing, rejecting the “massacre” claims.

The controversy surrounding these reports highlights the risks faced by journalists in conflict zones, particularly in Gaza, as they continue to report on the ongoing war.
