The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a new Building Code in 2025, aimed at improving building standards and transforming the city into a sustainable, Smart City. The development was revealed at the Lagos State Executive Council Retreat on the Domestication of the Lagos Building Code, which took place at Ikeja GRA.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of collaboration between ministries and agencies within the built sector to ensure that the state’s development aligns with global best practices. He explained that the new code will help make Lagos more resilient by establishing higher standards for building regulations.

Dr Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser on eGIS and Urban Development, emphasised that the new code would complement the existing regulatory framework. It is designed to address issues such as land use, physical development, urban planning, building control, and planning permissions, while enhancing safety and sustainability.
Engr. Olufemi Daramola, the Special Adviser on Infrastructure, called the initiative a significant step towards achieving a Green Lagos. He stressed that the code would support proper building planning and ensure the durability of infrastructure in the state.
