UNESCO has officially recognised the Kano Durbar Festival as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The certificate of inscription was presented to Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa.
Nneka Anibeze, the minister’s special adviser on media and publicity, said Nigeria’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Hajo Sani, also delivered a congratulatory message during the presentation ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday.

The Durbar Festival, rooted in Hausa cultural traditions, features a grand four-day celebration of horsemanship and equestrian parades. It is considered the world’s largest procession of decorated horses, symbolising loyalty and unity within the emirates.
Miss Musawa highlighted the economic potential of Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage, while Sani urged the country to pursue further UNESCO recognitions for its rich cultural practices.
