Kano Demands Federal Compensation Over Sallah Durbar Ban Losses

The Kano State Government has urged the Federal Government to compensate it for economic losses resulting from the continued suspension of the Sallah Durbar celebrations.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Tajo Othman, made the appeal during a Sallah homage by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II to Governor Abba Yusuf, represented by Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo.

Security concerns linked to the state’s unresolved emirship crisis have led to repeated bans on Durbar festivities.

Mr. Othman said the halt has severely affected local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, traders, and transport operators—particularly around Kurmi Market—who rely on tourist spending.

Deputy Governor Gwarzo also called for urgent action to tackle insecurity in the North-West, citing its role in securing electoral support.

He also urged residents to prioritise sanitation as the rainy season begins.

Emir Sanusi commended local councils for ongoing grassroots development efforts.
