Egypt’s foreign ministry has urged the immediate implementation of a ceasefire in Gaza, following Wednesday’s announcement of a truce between Israel and Hamas.
Mediated by Qatar, the United States, and Egypt, the agreement is due to take effect on Sunday, 19th January, and includes a swap of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners. Discussions for a permanent resolution are expected to follow.

Despite the truce announcement, Gaza’s civil defence agency reported at least 80 fatalities and hundreds injured in ongoing Israeli airstrikes. The Israeli military confirmed targeting around 50 sites over the past 24 hours.
Egypt has reiterated its readiness to host an international conference focused on rebuilding Gaza, where the United Nations estimates reconstruction could exceed a decade. The ministry’s statement underscores the urgent need to halt hostilities and address the humanitarian crisis.
