Resign or be impeached, Rivers APC Chair tells Fubara

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to resign or face impeachment. Okocha made the demand during a news briefing in Port Harcourt, criticising the governor’s recent invitation to lawmakers loyal to his political rival, Nyesom Wike, describing it as a “Greek gift.”

Governor Fubara’s invitation came after the expiration of a 48-hour ultimatum issued by the Rivers State House of Assembly, demanding the presentation of the 2025 budget. The assembly had earlier given the governor a deadline to sack commissioners and board members not screened by the House. The lawmakers have also summoned the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

In a letter addressed to Speaker Mathew Amaewhule and signed by Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, Governor Fubara confirmed his readiness to meet with the legislators. The meeting’s agenda includes discussions on a suitable venue for assembly sittings, payment of outstanding allowances, and budget presentation.

Despite hopes that a recent Supreme Court ruling would resolve the political crisis in Rivers State, tensions have escalated further as both factions continue to interpret the judgment in their favour. Okocha has accused the governor of violating the rule of law amid the ongoing conflict.
